## The Fraud Frankenstein

I've seen the same movie in every operation. You need email validation: hire a vendor. Device fingerprint: another vendor. Risk score: another. Relationship graphs: yet another. Velocities and aggregations: maybe you built that in-house, in a microservice nobody wants to touch.

The result: five tools, five contracts, five APIs, five dashboards. And each one's data lives on its own island.

The analyst who wants to answer "is this user connected to a fraud ring AND has a freshly created email AND accelerated their purchase frequency in the last hour?" has to open three tabs, cross-reference data manually, and hope the timestamps line up.

That's not a fraud system. It's a Frankenstein with five heads that don't look at each other.


## The Problem Isn't the Tool, It's the Integration

Every fraud technique has a zone where it shines and one where it's blind:

Each vendor on its own is usually good at what it does. The email one tells you if the address is 2 days or 10 years old. The device one tells you if the device has been seen before. The graph one shows connections between accounts.

But real fraud doesn't live in a single dimension. The attack that hurts is the one that combines an old email (passes the email filter), a new device (passes if you don't have a device rule), but if you cross it with the graph, that device is connected to 15 accounts that filed chargebacks last month.

That connection (email × device × graph × velocity) doesn't exist when each tool lives alone. And that's exactly where the most damaging fraud hides.


## "We Already Integrated It Internally"

Yes, I've heard it many times. The engineering team built a service that calls three vendors, combines the results, and makes a decision.

Sounds great until you look closely:

The net result: you pay for five tools, pay for the integration, pay for the maintenance, and still can't ask the question that actually matters.


## What Actually Needs to Exist

A fraud stack that works isn't a collection of vendors taped together. It's a platform where:

- Everything runs on the same event. The transaction enters once. Email, device, velocities, graph, model: all process the same event, at the same time, with the same data.

- Rules combine everything. You can write a rule that says: "if graph score > 0.7 AND transaction velocity in the last hour exceeds 3x the user's baseline AND email is less than 30 days old → review." One rule. Not three systems.

- The analyst sees it all together. A single dashboard where the transaction shows its score, graph connections, velocity history, email validation. No tab switching. No manual cross-referencing.

- Feedback flows back. When the analyst marks something as fraud or false positive, that label feeds the model, adjusts velocities, updates the graph. The system learns from every decision.


## The Math Nobody Does

Add up what you're really paying. Not just each vendor's license, add the engineering team dedicated to maintaining the integration, the fraud team's time lost cross-referencing data across tabs, and the firefighting hours every time a vendor changes their API and breaks the pipeline.

Each line item looks reasonable on its own. But when you add it all up (licenses, engineering, maintenance, lost time) the number is much higher than anyone in the company thinks. And the worst part: you're paying all of that and still can't make the cross-query you need.

Fragmentation isn't just a technical problem. It's a cost problem that nobody audits.


## Closing

Modern fraud isn't solved by buying tools and gluing them together. It's solved when all the data lives in the same place, rules can combine any signal, and the system learns from every decision.

If your fraud operation looks more like the Frankenstein than the platform, the problem isn't that you need one more vendor. It's that the ones you have don't talk to each other.
